“Matthew’s Story” is another edition in the Gospel Storyteller Series of Books which was started to enable children to read, understand, enjoy and discuss what the Bible has to say. The text is written as if the Bible authors were telling the story to their grandchildren. “Matthew’s Story” is based on the Gospel of Matthew in the Bible. The book is written in the first person narrative as if Matthew the businessman is actually telling the story of his friend, Jesus. It is a natural bridge between the Bible storybook and the Bible itself.

From years spent in a classroom setting, Dr. Marvin G. Baker observed one of the most frustrating things for a student is the lack of comprehension of what they’ve read. Telling them to “Read it again” makes little sense when one just doesn’t understand what has already been read. Many of us have the same experience when reading the Bible. “Matthew’s Story” is Dr. Baker’s attempt to help us understand what we’ve read when a teacher is not there to help.

The books in the Gospel Storyteller Series are not intended as translations of the Bible. They do include the geography and culture of that day which helps to create a clear picture. The conversational style of presentation of the series is intentional. Providing vivid details to make a story come alive will hopefully create a desire to hear more. The Bible is a history of actions and consequences from which we may gain information about how to repeat or avoid similar results.

Reading books in the Gospel Storyteller Series should help one to know God better and to become a better Christian, no matter what the age. Christian education teachers and parents will definitely find this a worthy resource, but “Matthew’s Story” is for anyone with a desire to know more about understanding the Bible. I recommend “Matthew’s Story” to one and all!
