Marie Davis relates the personal life struggles of four women who lived in the mid 1900's. Although each woman’s story and the crises they overcame is different, all of these women survive and find the way to a peaceful existence in their worlds. Some of the problems and issues confronted by these families are familiar to many of us in today’s world even though our society is different and the number of extended families is dwindling. Without as much choice in career, survival skills or agency assistance, Ms. Davis, in everyday language, writes these tales of our human instinct for survival.

Women of all ages would benefit from reading this book. It is especially geared towards those that are currently, or have had the misfortune of facing abuse in their lifetimes. This read will provide hope that although one may be suppressed, if the spirit isn’t broken, healing and self discovery can take place. It will further show that there is more help and understanding of abuse and economic hardship now than there was prior to the Roosevelt administration. Leaders of churches and communities were known in previous days to advise a woman to keep quiet about her plot in life and live with it. Our society today offers assistance to those who seek it and are motivated to be self-sufficient.

In my work with homeless families, many of the same issues and concerns exist in our modern world. Although with today’s social service agencies, one will not go hungry in America. However; other basic needs such as housing, clothing and transportation may not be met. An added resource of general agencies women can turn to for help would be a welcomed addition to further book publications.

I would recommend “Pearls of Wisdom: Surviving against All Odds” to women, young and old. For those who are struggling with survival and abuse, it will provide hope. For women who are uncertain of their ability to make a life on their own without the aid of their childhood family or a partner, reading this book will give them guidance. May the lives of beautiful, caring women shine with their own personal happiness in their home life.
