“Splinters to Love” is a well-written, fictional novel that contains many messages that are critical to having a healthy, happy relationship. The story begins with Keegan when he is an adolescent. He is a good-looking, but shy kid. He has girls interested in him, yet he is unsure how to act. This results in creating many embarrassing, confusing moments for him. Keegan has a close relationship with his aunt Sylvia and he starts calling her for advice on understanding women. It is in these conversations that the author, Larry R. Fisher, conveys some great advice on dealing with relationships.

In one conversation, Aunt Sylvia tells Keegan that she has seen him go through many “splinters.” When he asks he what “splinters” are she says, “All those painful, awkward, or embarrassing moments. You know, healed and gone forward. Learned not to get stuck that way again. Next time to get jabbed a whole new way.” It is Aunt Sylvia that has helped Keegan through these splinters. He is a really good person and does not use the insight that she provides him to use women. He puts her advice to good use to try to help his relationships succeed. It is very much a huge learning process for him. Over the years, Keegan has several close relationships. When he finally does meet the right one and marries her, it is his aunt’s advice that helps the marriage survive during the early years when the greatest amount of adjusting and compromising is done.

I wish that “Splinters to Love” could be required reading for high school students. The lessons taught in it are really about showing men to use respect and consideration in their relationships. This is something that has to be genuine and not faked. I also wish that Mr. Fisher would write a book about a woman that has an uncle to go to for insight into men. It would sure be helpful to me! I really enjoyed this novel and the level of depth that it contained. I would definitely recommend it. “Splinters to Love” would provide some stimulating topics and animated discussions in a readers group.
