Festival of Stars Once a year the Weaver Princess and Cowherder have the possibility of meeting in the sky. The weather must be clear or they must wait another year. When the two star-crossed lovers meet “across the Milky Way” it is known as the “Festival of Stars.” The Emperor of the sky decreed that it was his daughter, the Weaver Princess’ “task of picking the stars and designing the rich and bejeweled cloth for the gods of the constellations.” She fell in love with the Cowherder and they “neglected their duties.” The Emperor was angry and refused to allow the two lovers to see each other. They begged for mercy and he relented allowing them one day a year. The ravens were their servants and formed a bridge across the River of Heaven so the lovers could meet. If conditions aren’t right for a meeting they must wait another year. The Pascisci, Indiana emergency room was extremely busy and there was a torrent of rain as Dare Borodin held his wrist while waiting to see a doctor. He’d been involved in an automobile accident. It would have been laughable if he hadn’t been in so much pain. The road was very slick, when he was broadsided by a woman when her Chihuahua had been startled by the thunder and had nipped the woman’s ear causing her to lose control of her vehicle. The dog had been sitting on her head. The beautiful doctor that assisted him was Dr. Kristin Olafsson. It was a chance encounter; both felt a connection, both went their own way. A year later, another emergency room, this time in Seattle, Washington, another accident, Dare was riding a bicycle when he was hit by a car. Once again the road was slick from rain causing a car to skid and hit his bike. This time instead of a broken arm Dare had a banged-up leg. Once again he sees Dr. Kristin Olafsson. Taking pity on him, she drives him home, shops for food and stays for pizza. They both realize the undeniable connection between the two of them. Are these two destined to pass in the sky or will they find true love? “Festival of Stars” by Eilis Flynn is a love story. This tale begins with the retelling of an ancient love story.
