“Tincture of Time” by Judy Schreiber-Mosher is the true account of the author’s journey through grief after the loss of her husband Loren.  The story begins with the illness of Loren as Judy recalls their early relationship.  As Loren dies of cancer Judy fills in more memories from their life together, both the good and the challenging as she navigates the unchartered territory of being a widow.

Simply stated, I loved this book.  I read it slowly as I pondered over Ms. Schreiber-Mosher’s words which were so beautifully written.   I felt her pain.  I saw her memories.  I sensed her struggles.  I am a relatively young woman, yet as I read about the author’s struggle to go through her husband’s clothes in the closet I looked into my own closet to observe my husband’s clothes hanging so innocently.  Though probably not intending to preach a message, Ms. Schreiber-Mosher has given me pause in my own life to be grateful for what I do have, even in the peaks and valleys within a marriage.

The book flows like a beautifully written poem moving from poignant scene to poignant scene as she tries to make sense of her life without her husband.  Whether deliberating about where to put her husband’s ashes, whether to join a support group, or when to contemplate dating again, Ms. Schreiber-Mosher gives an honest account of her feelings.  While not everyone will feel and act exactly the way the author has, she provides an open guidebook for the possibilities and feelings that may come when widowed.

The “tincture of time” refers to a saying her husband Loren used with the author when she worried about something in as, “Give it a bit of time first.”  In “Tincture of Time:  Living Through Grief to Hope,” Ms. Schreiber-Mosher shows the reader how the grief journey truly is lessened with the tincture of time, time that may seem to stand still, yet time that truly does go on.  What a beautiful message this book is.
