Article first published as Book Review: ‘Capone Bloodline’ by Tom Belton on Blogcritics.
“Capone Bloodline” by Tom Belton is the story of Albert Frank Capone (Scar Face’s cousin) the Boston family’s grandson. The main character, who happens to be the author, is his grandson on his mother’s side. In this memoir Belton uncovers his life lived within the outskirts of the Capone mafia. The book begins when Tom is in the garage of the Sherwood Boston hotel after a job interview when he was in his early twenties and out of the blue an armed robber pops out of nowhere. To his surprise he defends himself by shooting and wounding his assailant. It is in that moment that he realizes how his bloodline is a part of who he is, when he realizes that he could have very easily wound up dead.
I found Belton’s story very interesting. As an Italian immigrant, people have joked at my expense about possible connections with the famous Italian families on many occasions. To read about a Capone descendant who kept himself on the outskirts of the mafia activities while working in his career in the hotel industry, was revealing, inspirational and a testament on how we can decide who we can be in spite of our bloodline. Belton did a great job exposing his life story in a well written, entertaining, and thought provoking book. I read it in half a day as I found it very difficult to put down. Belton’s story telling skills which incorporated action and romance are excellent.
“Capone Bloodline” by Tom Belton is not another “Godfather” story. It is a true story of a man who decided to live his own life, deciding who he was going to be while dealing with the traits and history of his own bloodline. On top of the inspiring story is an adventure as he confronted and survived situations from his own life in his own Capone way showing how we can accept who we are by taming our bloodline when certain traits come out. I really enjoyed this book and am happy Belton decided to share his story. A must read for sure!
