“Golf Chronicles: An Amateur’s Lifelong Dedication to the Game” by Joseph Bronson is an impressive book about the authors experiences surrounding the game of golf. He shares his experiences not only as a memoir type of read that merely relays a chronological telling of his excursions, but from the viewpoint of a regular guy – someone whose dedication and love of the game cannot be denied.
Bronson has been playing golf for over 40 years, and his business responsibilities afforded him ample opportunities to play at courses all over the world. Along with playing some iconic courses, Bronson also had the spectacular opportunity to meet and spend the day with Arnold Palmer. This clearly shines through as one of his most meaningful and memorable experiences and it was a joy to read his declaration and confirmation about one of the most influential figures in the history of the game.
Throughout the narrative, Bronson’s distinct voice projects a down-to-earth nature and a matter-of-fact type of humor. I laughed out loud at his story about the certain snooty treatment he and a friend were subjected to at Royal St. George’s in England – I promise I only laughed because I could actually imagine the horror and embarrassment of the experience as if I was right there with them! The chapter on taking lessons was priceless and even though I have nowhere near Bronson’s experience, I could totally relate to his game seemingly falling apart after taking lessons. For me the only thing I had to learn was to forget everything I thought I knew and I quickly found out that it’s much harder to unlearn than to learn!
There is a wealth of information in this book, highlighting some of the best courses around the world, the hardest courses, major events on tour and details about the holes that were hardest for him to play. Bronson also shares insightful information on golf equipment and his opinion on the current state of the game.
I’m passing this book along to my husband next, as I know he will thoroughly enjoy reading about Bronson’s experiences. I recommend “Golf Chronicles: An Amateur’s Lifelong Dedication to the Game” by Joseph Bronson to all fans of the game. Whether spectator or player, this engaging, heartfelt read will inspire and delight.
