To tell the truth, “My Pain Woke Me Up - Bliss: A Survivor’s Tale of Love, Life, Breast Cancer & the Pursuit of Happiness” by Jean Criss is one of the rare books I have read that I struggled to get through. There was so much frivolous information in this book that the important parts were hidden.

Overall, the book is about a fictional character Jean who has had relationship problems, then learns she has cancer and after a long, tedious battle with medications and doctors, she becomes her best advocate.

I do think that the author could have eliminated much of the repetitive information to make this more interesting. The book itself looks like a textbook. There are nineteen chapters in all, with topics such as: Driving Me Crazy; Shopping Cancer; Million Dollar Boobs and The Road Ahead.

I do think that the overall premise of the book about survivorship is a good one; it was just boring to read. I do think the author has great knowledge about cancer and surviving. Her experience is in marketing and digital media prior to her writing this series of books.

I do think that Jean Criss does have, or did have, many struggles in her life from becoming a widow in her twenties, having a failed marriage and then struggling with the diagnosis of cancer. There was good information about where and how to get good, detailed information on cancer and treatment options. One of the good points of the book was never take a doctor’s word as the only option - get second opinions, get down to doing research for oneself and look at other options. In addition, as the author pointed out, it is important to have a good support system in place and take the time to help others who are in the same boat as you are.
