Growing up as the youngest of four children, I had some very definite ideas of what was fair and what was not. In the drama of my little world, life was very unfair. I’ve always held on to the idea of fairness in dealing with others, but didn’t put a whole lot of thought into how much of our life is actually directed by this word. Reading “A Brief Discussion on Fairness Analysis” by Rongqing Dai has really given me a lot of food for thought. Discovering I need to let go of my basic childish ideas of fairness, reading this text made me realize that I need to delve a lot deeper into my thought processes. This text helped me to discover that our social and economic systems are directly affected by how we perceive fairness in our daily lives.
Rongqing Dai, an engineer with a passion for philosophy, has opened my eyes to looking at the world in a different light. Everything we are a part of is influenced in some way by dynamics of fairness. This includes analyzing fairness on topics such as history, politics, the economy and even literary works. We can use fairness analysis as a tool to analyze our social economic systems.
This is a very complex topic, and even though it addresses some simplistic ideas about things such as lying and cheating, it also goes much deeper into social fairness and the economy. I did not find this book to be a light read, nor is it something that would be found in the self-help section of a book store. “A Brief Discussion on Fairness Analysis” by Rongqing Dai definitely belongs in the category of philosophy, and I believe it would make an excellent textbook. It would also be a great supplemental book for a class like social studies or economics at the college level.
