Article first published as Book Review: The Gospel Train by G. Russell Dey on Blogcritics.

In “The Gospel Train,” author G. Russell Dey addresses the status of the human race, where we stand, and where we are headed. He looks at the origins of different religions, conflicting conclusions, the origins of the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the forces that have fashioned the evolution of religion. Dey approaches his dialogue on the basis of the Christian Bible and the nature of God. He traces religious history from verifiable documents, ancient and up-to-date records.

Carefully referenced, Dey encourages readers to use their own Bibles to compare the accuracy of scriptures included in the narrative. The book is the result of over thirty years of thorough research and detailed examination of the history and evolution of world religions. Dey has compiled information from authenticated ancient records. A bibliography, end notes, index, and resource list would be invaluable additions for any future editions of this book.

Dey has chosen to use an allegorical illustration of the train to present the results of his study. He asks the reader to read with an open mind as they join him in an honest judicious consideration, of a personal theological stand, as well as to look to their religious leaders for an explanation, verification, and accountability for their conclusions.

I found the information included on Dey’s coverage of the following topics uniquely interesting and important:

·         History of the Christian Church

·         The Apocrypha

·         The Dead Sea Scrolls

·         Ecumenical Councils

“The Gospel Train” by G. Russell Dey challenges the reader to pursue a “deeper understanding of spiritual matters and their true purpose…a firm foundation of truth…and authentic spirituality.”
