As I read “Echoes in the Universe: A Spiritual Memoir,” by Leonard Goodwin, I was drawn to the notion that I was engaging in a greatly unique piece of work.  Goodwin’s autobiography is written as a narrative poem which, to me, leaves much room for individualized interpretation of the content.  I was enthralled with the everyday stories of his life.  From the time of his birth preceding the Great Depression to modern day 2013, Goodwin’s life spans some of the greatest events of the 20th century and the 21st century to date.  He is very fortunate to have witnessed some of the greatest growth and change in America and in the world and I enjoyed reading about these events and the way his life was shaped as a result.

I took the title of the book to mean that I would be reading about Goodwin’s spiritual experiences and a self-help book of sorts based on his experiences, but that was not the case.  There are brief references to spirituality at different points in the book but it wasn’t until close to the end of his writings that he began to write more about spirituality.  In his early years, Goodwin was disconnected from anything sp

iritual.  He was rather disconnected from people as well – like his connection with his first wife and his children when they were small.  As he got older and journeyed farther on his spiritual quest he was able to identify different levels of spiritual energy within himself and recognize some dark forces during some of the challenges of his youth.

Goodwin created a very vivid picture of his near death experience after his heart attacks – I felt like I was in the room with him.  He also touched briefly on his healing energy and was very open to new and different learning experiences.  I would have liked to have seen Goodwin write more about his transcendental events, but overall I really enjoyed “Echoes in the Universe: A Spiritual Memoir” by Leonard Goodwin.
