“This is Your Brain on Anxiety: What Happens and What Helps,” by Faith G. Harper reviews the basics of anxiety overall. It starts with explaining what anxiety actually is and follows with ways to identify anxiety in yourself, with steps to help yourself through it. Additionally, it can also assist a person who may have a person in their life who struggles with anxiety and how you can be a support system for them as well.
This book was definitely “5-Minute Therapy” as described on the book’s back cover. The simple language throughout the book could educate just about anyone with the basic understanding of mental health, which was appealing to me given that not everyone needs to know the exact science behind everything. Although this book doesn’t go deep into the topic of anxiety, it does give just enough information to have an understanding of what anxiety is, what causes it, what effects it has on the brain, as well as how this is displayed through human behavior. I also enjoyed the tone throughout the book. It was light and the level of reading could educate young teens and adults alike.
This book’s small compact size makes it easily able to fit in a purse or backpack for easy access if reference is needed throughout the day. The book and movie recommendations given at the end of the book are a helpful addition providing additional learning opportunities for the reader in the future.
“This is Your Brain on Anxiety: What Happens and What Helps,” is worth reading as a gateway to getting more help for your anxiety, if needed. Faith G. Harper created an appealing book both visually and educationally!
