The media is so full of conflicting information that relates to our health, I was grateful to have the opportunity to read “The Viruses and Microbes within Our Bodies” by James B. Hudson so that I could gain a better understanding and decide whether or not I need to wear a Hazmat suit to work. Written for the layperson, Professor James B. Hudson educates us about viruses and microbes in an easier to understand fashion than a textbook. Having not had a science class in over 20 years, I appreciated the glossary at the back of the book, and I referred to it several times. Infusing some humor into the serious subject helps keep it from being too intimidating.

In addition to being educated about things like viruses, fungi, parasites and bacteria that we are dealing with today, I also learned about some of the pandemics that we had dealt with in the past. For myself, I gained a better understanding of illnesses that were around when I was a child, including the Hong Kong Flu, the croup, and the Swine Flu. Rabies, herpes, HPV, and HIV are also explained. Tick-borne and mosquito-borne illnesses are covered. It didn’t help me that I had a mosquito buzzing around my head when I read about them.

The author also educates us on the positive aspects of maintaining a balance of microbes in our world.  Many of them play a beneficial role in helping us maintain our health. I think a lot of us forget this part.  In case they get out of balance, he covers herbal alternatives and what actually might work. I found this section extremely interesting because we are constantly being sold on herbal alternatives and I don’t want to try something that doesn’t have scientific backing.

I highly recommend that readers take advantage of the opportunity to read an interesting book written by an author who has vast experience in the subject. It might even put hypochondriacs at ease about the current state of our microbial world. James B. Hudson’s “The Viruses and Microbes Within Our Bodies” was easy to read and very beneficial.
