“While God Slept: A Memoir” by Emily Kemp was not an easy read for me due to some of the heart wrenching mature true content, yet I found it very difficult to put down. It is not your regular erotic novel, it is a deep, humorous, heart-wrenching, and bold account of the experiences of a little girl who after growing up in an environment not good for a kid, finds herself making wrong decisions that took her to a sex service life. However, this is not the theme of the book. The story begins when she is working in a sex booth. The reader will go through explicit descriptions of a customer which I found difficult to stomach and will not go into details here, but I find that such a beginning was necessary to establish the setting of Emmy’s life and state of mind. From here Kemp begins to recount Emmy’s childhood, which was not easy to read as a mother of two girls. I guess my point with this portion of my review is that I am glad I continued reading, as this story is real, and as much as it is easier to pretend all girls are treated as little princesses, quite contrary to the actual truth. Maybe by reading Emmy’s story and getting into her mind and heart, women will learn to be less judgmental of other women’s decisions as they are not in their shoes.

Enough about the topic, and on with the book! Kemp presented her memoir in short chapters that read like vignettes. This made the tough subject matter more manageable in my heart, which allowed me to appreciate her impeccable writing, and out of the box style. Her voice is raw, her writing skills are impressive. The combination of these qualities with her story made for a must read book that kept me glued to the pages even through the story points that challenged my heart.

I definitely recommend “While God Slept: A Memoir” by Emily Kemp as a five star book that contributes to all aspects of what readers look for in a book. It is heart wrenching at times, explicit and raw, unique in style, thought provoking, and sometimes even humorous. Kemp will for sure make a mark in the audience with her story.
