“Promises My Love” by DL Larsen is a novel about Francis Frailey. In spite of his family’s wealth, Francis Frailey’s childhood was destroyed by an abusive uncle.  His father was oblivious to what was happening and his mother failed to protect him from her brother. These betrayals had a devastating impact on both Francis’ ability to trust others and most of all, his inability to trust himself from hurting others with the rage that burns with in him. Fearing that he will harm his wife and his children, he holds himself apart, so that he can’t hurt them. He is too blinded by his feelings to see how this affects his family.

Francis’ wife, sweet Christine, is determined to bring him out of his darkness and keep her family whole. Despite having experienced his rage in the past, she fully trusts him.  A turning point occurs when Francis discovers that his uncle is on his death bed. Driven by anger, he returns to his family home to confront him. Francis has to rise above the pain and hatred or he will completely lose himself. Fortunately, Christine’s brother steps in to help.

As Francis gains control of himself, he discovers that he is about to lose what is most important to him. Determined to make the best of the time that is left, he strives to be a better husband and father. The journey to finding his true self is not an easy one, yet having a loving wife and children helps him find the way.

“Promises My Love” by DL Larsen is a beautifully written novel. The author takes you inside the mind of each character so that you can see the world through their eyes and experience what they are feeling. Set during a time when help wasn’t readily available to those in emotional distress, it was interesting to see how important it would have been for families and friends to help each other get through crises.  I truly enjoyed reading this novel, in spite of the pain of what the characters were experiencing, the strength of the love from others around them felt very heartwarming. While this is not a light story, it is definitely one that will leave you thinking about it long after you have finished.
