“The String Horse” by Michele Cytron Linde and James Linde Campbell is an amazing book. As a mother-son team, they describe a year in James’ life, as a nine-year-old. The authors have truly captured the thoughts and behaviors of a nine-year-old.
James lives with his mom, a single parent who is a corporate lawyer; she travels frequently, often leaving James in the hands of his grandparents.
During the course of the year, mother and son try to come up with a way to stay close to each other and learn to communicate more. James has a difficult time talking about how he feels when he experiences sadness, fear, anger or being scared.
James’ mom comes up with Project-A-Team. It is where they can accumulate ideas on how to spend quality time together, find ways to talk about their feelings and take responsibility for their actions without any punishment. Honesty is the best policy.
Many times Project-A-Team is a hit or miss depending what is going on in the world and in their lives. But, the one thing it does is give them is the opportunity to learn more about each other and what they are experiencing in each of their lives.
When 9/11 occurred, James and his mother spent large portions of time talking about people who have different beliefs and about bullies at school and work. James will admit that his mom spoke to him like an adult and was not condescending.
They came up with the idea that they would donate unused toys and books to charity. James made string horses, one for his mom and one for him. That way James felt they would always be connected.
After reading this kindle book, I let my nine-year-old granddaughter read it. She was thrilled that James could explain exactly how most nine-year-olds felt and that he could write it out so well.
“The String Horse” by Michele Cytron Linde and James Linde Campbell is a must read for parents, grandparents and kids. Readers will learn so much about love, hope and trust. New relationships will be built and old ones will be stronger.
