Thomas Markley’s book “Prayers for Travelers” is an inspiring book of short prayers for those who may need some help getting started. The book consists of 51 prayers in English, Spanish, French, German, and Italian. Each prayer can either stand alone, be a conversation starter, a thought-provoker, or the beginning of a longer conversation with your personal higher power.
I liked this book because of its simplicity. The author does not seem preachy or trying to push his own beliefs or experiences. Each prayer is written in such a way that the reader can make it his or her own, and does not feel pressured to accept other’s beliefs.
This book is very helpful for me, as I travel a lot. Over the past 4 years, I’ve been to over 26 countries, have taken over 150 planes, and have travelled countless miles. With this book in tow, however, I feel more at ease when flying, taking the train, lost in a train station where everything is in Russian and I have no clue how to get where I need to be. But that is life, and sometimes you just have to make the best guess and hope that your Higher Power is watching over you.
I think the important thing to remember about this book is that it is not just for travelers, because life is full of travels, whether they are long or short, whether they are to the grocery store or to India. The point of this book is to bring some sort of peace or dialogue when you are feeling anxious or scared about something out of your control – which happens to everyone.
“Prayers for Travelers” by Thomas Markley is a book that comes highly recommended for those who experience a lot of anxiety and who think that opening up a conversation between themselves and their Higher Power would be beneficial for them. Bonus – all prayers are in 5 different languages!
