I was so excited for the opportunity to read “Arizona and New Mexico: 25 Scenic Side Trips” by Rick Quinn. As frequent road-trippers, My husband and I are always looking for new places to explore – we typically head west (from Texas) and New Mexico has been one of our favorite locations as it is so easily assessible from where we live. That this book also highlights Arizona was just the icing on the cake so to speak as we have been talking about heading that way for the last couple of years.
What immediately stands out about this book is that it’s not a book about destinations, but rather outlines scenic alternate routes to travel off the beaten path of 4 different interstate highways located in the two states. The journeys are aptly named Scenic Side Trips and there are 25 different trips covered in this book. No matter which highway you take, the side trips outlined will bring you back to the one you started on – just consider the side trips as little detours full of new experiences, adventures and treasures.
Each Scenic Side Trip tells the reader how far off the beaten path you will go, and how long it will take in driving time. Be sure to include additional time for sightseeing and such. It also spotlights areas of interest in the towns along the way, what the area is known for, any festivals or events held in the area, etc. – really any detail you could ever wish to know is included in these pages.
The book itself is absolutely beautiful. Stunning photographs are featured on every page. I must admit, I scrolled through the pages before I even started reading just because my eyes were drawn to the magnificent photos on the cover. The photos, combined with detailed maps and highlights about each stop along the route, one could easily content themselves with being an armchair traveler. I think my copy of the book might just become a bit worn out over time, and that’s okay – it’s certainly sturdy enough to handle some heavy use.
Overall, I highly recommend “Arizona and New Mexico: 25 Scenic Side Trips” by Rick Quinn as a first-class travel companion and guide, or as a wonderful book to curl up with and dream about your next road trip. For me, it will be a hard decision choosing which trip to take first.
