Margot Bain’s Grandma Gogo’s Alphabet is acolorful and exciting picture book that takes readers on a journey from A – Z. A book dedicated to Ms. Bain’s grandchildren, as well as all children, Grandma Gogo’s Alphabet follows Grandma Gogo through each letter of the alphabet. This book teaches readers about the importance of kindness, honesty, caring for others, and living a healthy lifestyle. Each page is equipped with large watercolor letters, illustrations of Grandma Gogo and young kids, as well as other grandparents, and one sentence describing what each letter stands for. This book is timely, in that most children are glued to electronics and don’t have much of a social life these days. But in Grandma Gogo’s Alphabet, all of the kids are laughing, playing, and enjoying life.
Daddy Is Amazing Like That by Mary Anne McMahon and Jennifer Bucciero Boyles is based on the authors’ real lives, featuring two sisters and their father, who uses a wheelchair. Throughout the story, there are examples of how the father has not let his disability stop him from pursuing a full, rich life. For emotional support, he started a group where other parents in wheelchairs can meet, share their experiences, and plan activities together. One such activity is sports day, which highlights the physical activities people in wheelchairs can participate in. Throughout the book, the author highlights how the father continues to be a good parent, doing as many “typical dad things” as he can, including giving his children good advice, modeling positivity, and attending their activities, such as the Daddy/Daughter dance.
