“Money, politics, and religion have no place in the same sphere of influence, and yet you all seem determined to have them engaged in flagrant ménage à trois!” Scintillant Camor, Master of the Ministry of Life for the Pan-Galactic Republic, makes this statement in the face of continual human misbehavior on Earth. His assessment serves as a summary of why post-apocalyptic Earth is the way it is. He is an empath and one of the main characters in Stephen Eric Johnson’s novel, The Man from Rock Bottom. Sin, as he’s called by his friends, has been called upon to try to save what’s left of the human race after worldwide war and ecological catastrophe. The Pan-Galactic Republic has reluctantly decided to award Sin his mission, though other leaders are doubtful about both its validity and its chance of success.
What would you do if a young woman showed up on your doorstep with a child who had obviously been hurt? Would you bring them in and promise to get the child back to her home far away? Or turn them away and let someone else handle it? A Prophet Named Ike by Evelyn M. Exley is about a monk who allows his life to be led by God daily. Both through visions, hence the name Prophet, and instincts, he is able to work to make their world a safer place. When Vessy shows up at his cabin out in the woods with an injured child, he has no choice but to accept that this is God’s plan for him. They decided to set out to return her to her home. Will they succeed? Or will there be too many obstacles?
Baldur Sigurdson, the Wolf of Vanaheim (as others have named him), is leading a more settled life when we catch up to him in the second book of The Wolf of Vanaheim series. After saving his world using (ahem) controversial tactics, we find him at the beginning of Ghost of Kotoama serving as the head of the security detail for the stunning diplomatic envoy, Freyja. It seems he’s left his pirate-style tactics behind him in favor of a more civilized approach. Fear not; this Wolf may currently be wearing a tuxedo and appearing like he’s listening to his master. It’s just sheepskin. He’s still the same feral brute we’ve come to love and appreciate.
