Lady of the Waves: Love in the Time of Climate Change by Sharon D. Sheltzer is a beautifully written story about a girl named Aallotar, who loses her family in a devastating tsunami while on vacation in Thailand. Desperate to find her mom, she ends up as a beggar on the streets in order to stay with a local who takes her in. She meets a boy from San Francisco there who is on a missionary trip to help traumatized orphans, and he is immediately drawn to her. Years later, destiny brings them together again at a global climate summit, which they are both a big part of. Aallotar has grown into a strong, capable young woman and gradually opens up her heart, realizing that perhaps there’s still room for love after all.
