Kit Karson’s Murder Stings: A Sheriff Elliott Mystery is book six in The Anderson Chronicles series and fuses a mystery adventure with police procedural elements. But there is a dash of humor in all of this and a bit of family complications. The story opens with Sheriff Peter Elliott checking the status of a nearby wildfire. The scene is painted like something from a movie, with flames and smoke filling the air as an air tanker dumps gallons of water in an attempt to contain the fire. Sheriff Peter needs to find a way to safely evacuate the inhabitants, which requires a few phone calls and a day’s hike.
R. Weir’s Justice for the Accused is Book Two in the Steel Wheels Cold Mystery series. It reads like a cold-case mystery with elements of a crime thriller and a touch of family drama. As the story begins, retired police officer Donnie Steel is headed to eastern Minnesota to meet up with his parents at his grandparents’ Steel Lake Cabins and RV Resort. He has his former police K-9, Kogel, with him for the ride. His mom wants him to meet with Ann, who’s now a lawyer but was affectionately known as little Annie from childhood. She needs his help with a cold case involving her client, Von Oliver, a decorated Army Ranger who has been accused of murdering his girlfriend, Brie Ivory, a year ago. As Donnie begins looking into the case, it becomes bigger than the simple question of whether Von is guilty or innocent. The more he digs, the more he uncovers what Brie was hiding.
J. Dale Dillard’s No Safe Harbor is a fusion of crime thriller, suspense, and police procedural. It is book one in The Nuevas Montañas Files series. Dillard does not waste time with this one. As the story begins, Deputy Sheriff Rick Hunter is on Highway 7 and driving through a communication dead zone east of Nuevas Montañas. A barefoot woman jumps in front of his headlights, and she has no phone or purse. All of a sudden, rounds of bullets are spraying his car before he can even process what in the world is happening. The woman is shot, but he still manages to risk his life to get her to the hospital, with bullets still tearing through his vehicle.
