Although I have not read the first book –yet, it’s definitely on my list after reading this one— I gathered that this book continues the thrilling and inspirational journey of Avery, devoted Mother Earth lover.
This sequel, “A Stellar Purpose II” by Natacha Belair is set six months after the events of the original book, on a secluded Pacific Island. After winning a trip to a five-star self-sustainable eco-resort, Avery is joined by other young environmentalists recognized for their efforts to help the planet. The novel expertly blends environmental themes with Avery’s adventure.
From what I gather about the first novel, I imagine it covered Avery’s love of the earth and her never-ending efforts to explore sustainability, much like this one does. This novel feels like a continuation of Avery’s story as it embraces deeper questions about the future of the world.
From the outset, Avery and her peers are tested in new ways when they are thrown into a complex situation. The Peace Lily Resort initially appears to be a paradise with its eco-friendly design, but the otherwise stunning backdrops quickly reveal hidden dangers that push Avery and her new friends into a race against a dangerous environmental crisis.
The essence of youth idealism is masterfully crafted with characters who embody the spirit of activism and environmental stewardship. Belair has created a standout protagonist with Avery’s supernatural abilities, an animal protector with the very real and relatable concerns of simply being a teen. Avery’s interactions deliver heartfelt dialogue that adds layers to her character’s growth. Honestly, the entire ensemble of characters is so engaging that they thoroughly enrich the storyline.
I would be remiss if I didn’t emphasize that one of the most compelling elements of this story is its environmental focus. It’s what drew me to the book in the first place. Through the eyes of Avery and her peers, readers are introduced to pressing ecological issues, such as deep-sea mining, ghost fishing, and greenwashing that they might not have known about otherwise. These themes are skillfully woven into the narrative, making the novel not only a work of fiction but also a call to action for young readers to reflect on their role in preserving the planet. This blend of fantasy and real-world issues sets “A Stellar Purpose II” apart from typical young adult fiction, making it a thought-provoking and educational read.
