Feathers, Treasures, & Sandy Paws: The Trilogy is a delightful collection of Baldwin’s three books following eleven-year-old Jack Cooper and his group of loyal friends, both human and furry, as they go on adventures and explore the world around them. This collection includes Empty Pockets, Big Little Secrets, and Time Will Tell, which put our cast of characters into new mysteries with a fairy-tale-type feel. Empty Pockets introduces readers to the group of friends and animals, allowing us to explore Old Town Hansford Landing and really get a feel for the salty air around it while seeing Jack through a few moral quandaries. Big Little Secrets focuses more on a cozy mystery, with a thief stealing a family heirloom, while Time Will Tell takes us through history alongside pirates, with a dash of time travel.
This trilogy, illustrated by Ilaria Campana, is quite charming and would be perfect for independent readers around eight to ten years-old, or as a read-aloud for mixed aged groups. There are a few moments that may be stressful for younger listeners, especially in the third book with pirates and sea storms, but the stories all have happy endings and comforting characters. Readers who enjoy Adventures in Odyssey and Beverly Cleary will find a lot to like in these characters and stories. The author does a good job of exploring courage, imagination, and the intricacies of friendship in an age-appropriate way. I could see this being a fun lead-up to reading Treasure Island, or other adventure tales with a young reader.
The writing is simple, and may seem a bit repetitive at times, but this will be helpful for burgeoning independent readers. I think a read-aloud would do best over a few chapters versus extended reads, just to keep up variety and interest. It can be a little hard to keep track of all the characters at times, but having the character list at the beginning of the book is a helpful reference. I would recommend having a physical copy over an e-book copy of this story for exactly that reason. Feathers, Treasures, & Sandy Paws: The Trilogy by Shirley Lee Baldwin is sure to be a relaxing favorite with young children and their guardians for future story times.
