Horse Tales of the Revolution by Peg Casey is a charming retelling of the American war for independence from British rule told from the point of view of the animals who witnessed history unfolding. This slim middle-grade volume covers the arrival of the Pilgrims to Jamestown to the conclusion of the war, with plenty of humor and detail to spare. Each chapter follows the perspective of a different animal and event, allowing the reader to consider history from a different point of view alongside charming illustrations of the animals in question. The visuals help to keep readers engaged, but the short chapters will also be approachable for emerging or struggling readers. Some chapters, like Winny the Gossiping Goat’s section, are only a page, while other sections are several pages longer.
The strength of this collection lies in its lighthearted approach to history. Young readers will enjoy unraveling the highlights of the struggle for independence in the United States and recognize famous figures they may have learned about in their studies. The animals each have their own distinct personalities as well, describing their experiences to the collection of animals with gusto. I would have preferred some focus on the perspectives of other groups beyond the colonists’. As it stands, there is no inclusion of the experiences and existence of other ethnic groups involved in the struggle. However, this could also leave room for educators to have dialogues and further research with young learners.
This novel would work well as additional reading in a homeschool or school unit on the American Revolution. It would have most appeal for students who are animal lovers and perhaps coax a few history-averse children into interacting with the subject in a more creative way. The stories open a lot of doors for thought about who and what else was involved during important historical moments, allowing for a lot of wiggle room in a curriculum and a student’s curiosity. Due to the nature of the chapters, this book would also work well as a read-along or a before-bed read between guardians and children. However it is approached, Horse Tales of the Revolution is sure to inspire interest and curiosity across its readers.
