Humm Goes North by Doreen Baker is a heartwarming story about a curious hummingbird named Humm who goes on an amazing adventure to explore the north end of Vancouver Island with the help of her best friend, shape-shifter Queen Reen. Children will get to learn about the many magical places there and their unique history, along with plenty of interesting facts about hummingbirds and their natural habitat. This story teaches young readers a lifelong lesson about the value of friendship, trying new things, believing in yourself, and just keep flying.
This story is exciting, engaging, and simple to understand for ages (approximately) three to ten. They will be able to relate to the curiosity of Humm and the urge to explore the world, learn, and experience new things. This story will further spark their curiosity and creativity, leaving them wanting to learn more while also using their imagination to come up with new ideas and solutions.
I like the story’s unique blend of fictional characters, real-life places and facts, and fantasy worlds. This will further engage children and keep them occupied, even after finishing the story.
The character development and relatability are magnificent, particularly with Humm. She learns to stretch her wings and discover new places and creatures she’s never met before, using her courage and belief in herself, along with the support of Queen Reen. There are times when she feels cautious or unsure of herself, just like we all do at times. She shows children the importance of trying new things, even when you’re nervous. Even if something doesn’t work out, keep trying, and grow from it. She also shows children how to be kind to others and to take good care of our world.
Humm’s special connection with Queen Reen is immediately evident in the way they lovingly interact with each other. They show how friends lift each other up and enjoy their time together.
The bright and breathtaking illustrations in this book will immediately draw children (and adults!) into the story and keep them mesmerized until the very last page. The detail and blended colors are incredibly impressive. The illustrations also enhance the rich world-building in this story, bringing it to life.
The detailed text is just as vivid:
As I approach, I feel the pulsating pull of energy from the opening. I also see the air around me appear to light up just like the Northern Lights! (It is daytime!) I hear a soft electrical buzzing sound. Queen Reen seems to whisper in my head, “Fly into the light, Humm.”
I highly recommend this book to all children early readers and preschooler with the help of a more mature reader. It would make the perfect gift or addition to a library, classroom, or even a nature center. I guarantee you everyone will love Humm Goes North by Doreen Baker!
