“Jocko the Raven” by Phil Ellsworth, DVM is an incredible true story about a young raven that was injured and brought to an animal hospital where he was taken great care of by an expert vet and dedicated staff members. As Jocko recovered, he began to trust and build a bond with his caretakers, whom he may just call family someday. His special gifts didn’t just surprise and entertain others; he saved lives as well. Jocko tells an amazing story full of hope, survival, persistence, and the blessings of those who love and care for each other.
What an inspirational story! Author Phil Ellsworth does an excellent job getting across the message of this book in a way that children can understand and relate to. When you’re in a scary situation and don’t know what to do, listen to your heart and let people who care about you help you, just like Jocko did. Keep trying, believe in yourself, and never give up! As Jocko explains in his story, he slowly began to heal and soaked up the kindness of the staff who took him in. He then learned to give back that kindness, discovering a lifesaving talent along the way.
The characters in this story are authentic and relatable. They all illustrate a kind and caring spirit which shines throughout the entire book. I absolutely love Jocko; what a compassionate, brave, and intelligent raven! His animated personality lights up a room, which is also evident in the bright and beautiful illustrations. They capture his personality and emotions throughout the story. Children will love the friendly and adorable faces of the different characters.
The setting for the story is very vivid and atmospheric. It made me feel like I was right there with the characters. My favorite part in the story is when Jocko flies high up over the missing little girl sitting against a tree trunk by the forest; he swoops right down and comforts her. Jocko saves the day with his courage and determination!
“When I found a direction, I followed it in the air for a while and then flew above the trees. I couldn’t go real high as the clouds were not far above the trees. So I flew back and forth, and it wasn’t too long before I saw her sitting against a tree trunk sucking her thumb. I then flew as high as I could and called, “Here,” as loud as I could. Pretty soon, some people came in my direction, and I flew down and hopped in front of them to the girl. Everybody was really happy!”
I recommend this book to children ages five and up. This book is geared towards children of all backgrounds. I guarantee you they will love this inspirational story.
