During this era of potential literacy crisis, people who are in charge of childhood literacy must pay attention to teaching phonics and other reading skills. Prism Phonics: I Love My Dad by A. Child and Eve Englebrite does just this, taking the learning of the children who read it seriously and providing visual cues to enhance your child’s phonics skills in both English and Spanish. It is a very helpful book in teaching children how to read, especially if you are a parent who wants your child to be bilingual.
Prism Phonics: I Love My Dad shows a day in the life of a father and son, as they go about their day and love each other as family does. The presentation of the story is aided by the charming illustrations of Josephine Hampton. The story itself is pretty straightforward, and while it has a strong Christian overtone, it ultimately serves to teach children from kindergarten to second grade how to accurately read, with every page showing which letters to stress and giving a visual guide to further reading skills. The story is heartwarming and good for any early reader who needs a little help with reading. When the English version is finished, then the whole story starts again in Spanish, making this perfect for bilingual learners.
Overall, I felt the book to be very cute and still very poignant to read, especially as a parent. There need to be more books like this for kids, ones that stress the importance of literacy skills and give kids active instructions on how to improve their knowledge of phonics, and this is a good series to start with. This is ultimately a very sweet book, one that you can have fun reading with your children, practicing literacy skills along the way.
While reading Prism Phonics: I Love My Dad by Child and Englebrite, it made me feel very grateful and appreciative for the simple, day-to-day life I have with my own child. This is a very inspiring little picture book, and one that I know many parents and children will return to often.
