One year after Luma has saved the kingdom of Edira from the oppressive rule of wizards, a creature of darkness known as Entanglements starts to attack – first in the wizard’s kingdom, then in Luma’s. An emergency meeting is called, and Luma enlists the help of her friend, a mage, to try to understand what they are up against. Realizing that they must join forces with the wizards to fight a common enemy, Luma must get past her fears to help save everyone from a bigger threat to all. In the fantasy novel Queen of Starlight by Molly M. Hammond, readers enter into a world of wizards, dragons and a talking owl who must constantly tend to “owl matters.”

This is a fantasy story with a strong female lead character. Luma is very brave and confident. Corr is protective of her, perhaps a bit too protective, but it’s mostly because he loves her and wants to keep her safe. Even when she gets injured in battle, he feels bad for not protecting her. Luma, of course, keeps reminding him that she can take care of herself, and that he shouldn’t feel so bad every time she gets physically hurt. It was cute at first to watch Corr act so protective of the woman he loves, but it began to get a bit tiresome after a while. I loved the character Figg, though! She is smart, witty, and won’t take any grief from anyone. The occasional banter between the characters had me laughing, and I was inspired to see Luma take on a more assertive and brave role in the story.

The part about the riddle is most intriguing. Even though I am new to this series, I still tried to interpret it with what little I knew of the characters and the situation. But this is not what it takes to understand the riddle. One must read the whole story to understand it. As the pieces of the puzzle fell into place while I read this story, more understanding of the riddle occurred. This isn’t to say that the riddle is prophetic, just that the characters needed to go through certain events to realize the truth behind the words of the riddle. 

This story is full of lots of other surprises and tense moments. It made me laugh, cry, and rejoice. There is a very sad part of the story when a beloved character dies, and I was very moved by it. But there were other parts of the story that were mysterious and surprising.

Queen of Starlight is the second book in the Starlight Series and is a fantasy novel full of magic, adventure, and excitement. It is a well-written and well-plotted story that was very hard for this reviewer to put down. Sure to be enjoyed by fans of fantasy novels, as well as fans of stories that include dragons, it is a novel that captures the power of love, the bond of friendship, and the miracle of magic found within.
