Raising Future Adults: How You Can Help Ensure Your Children Grow Up to be Thriving Adults is a comprehensive and practical guidebook written by school psychologist David Krasky. It teaches parents all about guiding their children to develop long-term positive mindsets and permanent habits, leading to healthy growth and independence. Children’s and teenagers’ brains are still developing and require the same needs we all had growing up (which don’t change in today’s modern world, despite the very different environments from the past). Krasky discusses the essential emotional and social skills children need to become well-rounded adults who will thrive on their own someday.
What sets this book apart from many other parenting books is the balance of approaches used. This book emphasizes being encouraging yet realistic and honest, planning for the long-term, and taking small steps without the need for perfection or immediate results. Krasky focuses on using modern and realistic strategies that children today can benefit from, such as limiting screen time (which goes for parents as well!), consistent (but not harsh) discipline, and letting them pursue their own positive goals. He is relatable in that he’s gone through these issues himself as a parent, so he knows what it’s like as well as what works and what doesn’t.
Regardless of the cause, the ultimate goal is to raise our children in a way that teaches them how to manage their own lives. This includes problem-solving (not always on their own), self-advocating, asking for help, planning and prioritizing, and taking care of their own physical, emotional and social well-being.
There are two key points in this book that I found especially beneficial:
1) Letting children feel their feelings without forcing them to suppress them (which will backfire) or trying to give them whatever they want to make them feel happy again when they are upset. Children will learn how to self-regulate while being honest about their feelings using healthy communication skills.
2) The focus on practicing and modeling self-care as a parent. Parents should find healthy activities every day that help them relax and rejuvenate from the stress of everyday life. They must slow down and pace themselves to avoid burnout. Children will be encouraged to practice this behavior themselves, and it will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
I highly recommend Raising Future Adults by David Krasky to all parents or guardians who wish to raise their children to become thriving and independent adults.
