Gwyn Miller was blindsided when she received a devastating breast cancer diagnosis in 2013. The wife and busy mom of three was fitter than most—a marathon runner with near-perfect nutrition and no family history of breast cancer. So why her?

After the initial shock had subsided, Gwyn jumped into the proverbial boxing ring, ready to fight this ruthless opponent and determined to be victorious. But even the most fortuitous attitudes can falter when you’re battling the effects of the disease. Gwyn leaned heavily into her Christian faith, finding connections between Jesus’ plight and her own to get her through the harrowing time. Beyond her faith, Gwyn was more determined than ever to complete a marathon in the fall, despite others’ discouragement.

Run, Mommy, Run by Gwyn E. Miller is an emotional memoir, brimming with courage, positivity, and raw honesty. Like many of us, she is a mom doing it all—thriving in her career, raising kids, and setting ambitious fitness goals —but the harmony and carefully curated schedules go out the window when a crisis intervenes, forcing a readjustment of plans. Follow Gwyn’s inspiring story as she navigated the biggest challenge of her life.

The thing that inspired me most was Miller’s ability to see the silver lining in her suffering. Sure, she had her moments of self-pity and anger (which is completely understandable). Still, for the most part, her victor attitude remained intact. During recovery, she was forced to relinquish control over day-to-day tasks like her young son’s bedtime routine, taxiing children to extracurriculars, and preparing meals, but she chose to see it as a positive. It was a reason to slow down and be grateful for the small things, like rest and connection. Moreover, she remained steadfast in her Christian faith, trusting that He had chosen this path for her for a reason.

Despite the author’s commendable positivity, a shocking health diagnosis can evoke a myriad of emotions, particularly in her case, anger and insecurity. She felt it was unjust that, despite investing in her health and fitness, cancer had not spared her. This anger undeniably resonated with me when I reflect on being diagnosed with various chronic ailments, even though I live the healthiest lifestyle possible. I had to accept my fate and understand that things don’t always make sense—the world is not so black and white, and health can be incredibly nuanced.

Gwyn E. Miller’s thought-provoking memoir is a reminder of the powerful role that faith and resilience can play in adversity. Despite moments of frustration and uncertainty, she weathers the storm, never losing sight of her aspirations—remission and running to that finish line. Readers who enjoy memoirs and books about personal growth and overcoming obstacles will enjoy Run, Mommy, Run.
