Skyler and the Moonstone Medallions: Powers Every Kid Needs for Middle School and Beyond by Susan E. Chappelear is a delightful story for middle-grade readers that follows a twelve-year-old girl named Skyler, who has a lot to deal with in middle school. One day at school, she stumbles upon magical moonstone medallions with hidden powers, leading her to a mystical world she never would have dreamed of. She suddenly must learn to be courageous and trust herself as she is faced with a truth she desperately tries to hide. She then slowly begins to find her voice as she realizes that perhaps her differences from others aren’t so bad… in fact, maybe that’s where the magic is.
What a powerful message that is! Kids will learn from Skyler’s story that what makes them different is actually what makes them special. They will relate to Skyler and how she navigates middle school. They will also surely enjoy the humor sprinkled throughout the story.
What I really admire about Skyler is how authentic she is. She’s imperfect, makes mistakes like we all do, and struggles with her differences, but watching her slowly grow, gain confidence, and face her past made her growth feel genuine and relatable. Mrs. M was another character I admired—she is empathetic, patient, and the perfect person to guide Skyler without using force. The group of unique kids in the drama room was special as well. Each of them has their own struggles, personalities, and hidden strengths, which makes their personal growth very meaningful. Watching them learn to accept themselves was very heartwarming. Children will also surely appreciate the bond they share with each other.
Ms. M picked up the book from her grandfather and pressed it to her chest. “The Powers are the tools you need to navigate the difficulties in life. Being a teenager is a challenge, as all of you know.” She paused and made eye contact with each of them. “And it’s complicated. But remember this: it’s not about changing the extraordinary qualities that make each of you unique. It’s about giving you power over your own actions. Often, situations and other people can’t be changed. But these tools can help you control your response to whatever happens.”
The atmosphere in this story and the world-building is incredible. I felt like I was right there, rooting for the characters! The story and setting are so engaging and have a creative blend of real emotion, excitement, humor, and fantasy.
Susan E. Chappelear’s Skyler and the Moonstone Medallions made me have a new appreciation for kids today and the obstacles they face, yet how resilient they are and how they grow from these obstacles. I can relate to Skyler in that she faces insecurities and emotional barriers during this confusing time in her life (and I’m sure we all can to some degree!). I eventually learned, like she did, the importance of trusting and accepting myself and my uniqueness. I made friends who liked me just as I was.
I highly recommend this wonderful, engaging story to all middle-grade readers to read and enjoy.
