The Emperor of No One by Robert D. Bell follows Acari, who is brought back to life hundreds of years after his death with only pieces of his memory and a mysterious voice that he is only allowed to refer to as “B.A.” speaking to him in his head. B.A. demands that Acari hunt down the “Sentinels” and use a powerful crown to steal their vitality, which will eventually give B.A. enough power to return as well. As Acari travels and starts learning more about his past, the war, and what he actually is (and is not), the mission becomes a lot more complicated.
The best part of the book for me was the hook. Right from the beginning, I wanted to know what was going on. The book opens with Acari’s body basically being rebuilt, with B.A. asking for his input as it’s being done – and then he wakes up in a bog after being dead for hundreds of years. He doesn’t remember everything, so neither Acari nor the reader really knows the full story yet.
I also liked Acari because I couldn’t completely decide how I felt about him. Sometimes I felt bad for him because he’d been thrown into this situation without all of his memories and trusts B.A. more than he probably should. Other times, his choices made it really hard to root for him, but I actually liked that the book made me feel conflicted about him instead of making him an obvious good guy. There’s a lot to learn about the Khorcyns, Corcians, Sentinels, the crown, and Acari’s abilities. Some parts took me a little while to keep straight, and I think a few of the explanations and conversations with B.A. could have been shorter or more to the point.
Overall, Robert D. Bell’s The Emperor of No One felt different from other fantasy books I’ve read. There were enough strange ideas and unanswered questions to keep me invested, and the prologue was easily the strongest part for me because it made me want to find out what was actually going on. Bell has the start of a great series in the works here, with a highly unique world and a morally grey main character!
