What happens when you combine a wholesome family story, a will-they-or-won’t-they romance, and the swoony backdrop of Paris into one gorgeous novel? The French Effect by Patricia Sands, of course. It’s everything you could want out of a contemporary fiction novel, and transports you into the romantic scenes of France with ease. It’s truly a romance novel in every sense of the word, but not in the way you might think.
The French Effect is the story of Nora, a fifty-year-old Canadian writer who is recovering from a period of grief after losing her husband. Her daughter Chloe and Chloe’s husband Olivier present her with a solution- come visit them in Paris for two months to watch their neighbor’s dog. Nora reluctantly agrees, but finds herself in the midst of a whirlwind Paris life, dancing the tango with the handsome Luc, eating the best Parisian food, and visiting all of the sights Paris has to offer. When Olivier’s stuffy father Pierre comes back into the picture, will she give love a second chance?
This isn’t a conventional romance novel, as a large part of the romance is a build-up. It’s a closed door read in every aspect, something I personally prefer in my romances, as it builds up the plot effectively. This book reminded me a lot of Emily Henry’s recent novel A Great Big Beautiful Life, but I found this one to be more interesting. During her time in Paris, Nora finds a new muse in Chloe’s neighbor, a ninety-year-old woman who served as a messenger in her youth during World War Two. This portion of the book was probably the most interesting to read, and it’s beautiful to watch a grieving character get her inspiration back.
The French Effect by Patricia Sands is the full package in a contemporary novel. It truly transports you to France and gives you wholesome, fun characters to root for. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a good escape by way of summer reading- you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll swoon. I would especially suggest this for Francophiles, anyone who has been through loss, or someone who just needs a wholesome palate cleanser. The French Effect is a gentle read, but one that is very needed.
