Devil’s Tango is the second installment in D.R. Berlin’s The Third Estate series. It follows Secrets of the Manor. This adrenaline-packed thriller blends military intrigue, medical suspense, and psychological tension into a fantastic novel that immediately captured my attention. The narrative follows military officer Sophie Allard, who has traded flying for medical school. Her new career hits a snag when she is falsely accused of intentionally killing a patient. Another patient has also died under suspicious circumstances after whispering a cryptic message to her.

The death of the first patient causes her to be suspended while it is being investigated. Sophie quickly realizes that she has become the target of a powerful group desperate to keep secrets buried. She uncovers a trail of deception that forces her to question the loyalty of everyone around her, including those she once considered friends. Unexpectedly, one of her greatest enemies, Kai Lovato, becomes an ally, adding another layer of complexity to the narrative.

Berlin has a gift for quickly drawing readers into the action. The story is fast-paced, making it impossible to put the book down. One of its greatest strengths is its unpredictability. Just when it seems like the mystery is about to be solved, another fascinating twist changes everything. This keeps readers engaged and eager to solve the mystery alongside Sophie.

Character development is exceptional. Readers will connect with Sophie’s determination, vulnerability, and resilience. Her evolving relationship with her former nemesis is compelling. As previous enemies, they must work through uneasy alliances while constantly being faced with new dangers. The settings are also well described. From military installations and hospitals to Sophie’s own home, each place is vividly described, making the reader feel like they are watching an intense action film rather than reading a novel. Berlin does a great job of adding realistic technical details that help enhance the story rather than overburden it with technical jargon.

Although Devil’s Tango stands well on its own, it left me wanting to go back and read the first novel in the series so that I can follow Sophie’s journey from the beginning. D.R. Berlin has created an intelligent thriller, filled with suspense, intrigue, and a cast of interesting characters. Fans of fast-paced suspense and military thrillers will find this an outstanding read, and like me, will look forward to the next installment in The Third Estate series.
