Welcome, Baby Wigglet! is a story for preschool and early readers who may relate to being the oldest, youngest, or only child, and then are told at any point that the family will be expanding; the same can be true for siblings in any birth order (second to third, third to fourth, etc.). Particularly when young, change can be difficult, and depending on factors such as the relationship with parents, or perks or drawbacks the child receives for their birth order, the reaction and intensity to news such as “we’re having another baby!” or “you’re going to be a big ___” may vary.

In A.M. Berkowitz’s story, a piggy family on the farm currently consists of mom, dad, and daughter Gigglet. Gigglet is your typical girly-girl; she LOVES pink, sparkles, the beach, and anything that involves fun! When her parents provide a vague statement that they have news to share, and her guesses consist of the things she LOVES, and she’s told no, she is a little disappointed. When she’s informed she’s going to be a big sister, she’s slightly confused and unsure how she feels. After some time to think, she realizes that becoming a big sister is a new thing she can add that she will LOVE, and when the new baby arrives, she fits into her role with ease.

Welcome, Baby Wigglet! is designed for preschoolers and early readers with simple language and bright, colorful illustrations to aid comprehension and enhance enjoyment. While not every young reader will be a sibling, other real-life dynamics involving change can make the story relatable to a broad audience. This story would be ideal as a gift or to just read aloud from parents or grandparents when or following an announcement to a child.

Note from Lydia (age 11): Welcome, Baby Wigglet! is slightly below my reading level, and I am several years removed, and also can’t say that I remember the moment I became an older sister; however, this story is enjoyable because Gigglet is a funny and entertaining character, and babies are wonderful. Readers who like pigs will definitely enjoy this book, and there are others in the series featuring Gigglet, too! The length is just right for early readers, and the reading experience will be positive during independent and read-aloud times.
