With Whispers of the Silver Heart, Renee Remeta has created a fantastic first installment in The Highlands Saga series. This urban fantasy seamlessly blends magic, mystery, romance, and self-discovery. Set in the modern city of Miradea, the author has created an amazing world where magical society is divided between the powerful Highbloods and the less talented but usually much nicer Lowbloods. This results in a compelling tale that readers will find themselves unable to put down.

The protagonist, Mayla Charles, is a Lowblood healer whose mundane, anxiety-filled life is turned upside down when her best friend Willow disappears. Desperately seeking answers leads her to Anton Tevaris, who is a Highblood leader of the local investigative task force. Anton’s formidable magical abilities include the power to work with cold and ice. Anton also has a beautiful set of wings which enable him to fly. Mayla and Anton experience a devastating explosion at their first meeting. This leads Mayla to unexpectedly save his life. Anton discovers that Mayla’s magical abilities are far greater than she realizes; Mayla just needs to learn how to work with them. He will help connect her with someone who can help guide her.

As more Lowbloods, especially children, vanish, and terrifying mythological creatures start targeting them, Mayla joins Anton’s eccentric investigating team to help uncover answers to the secrets behind the threats to stop those involved. As Mayla and Anton work together to try to solve this fast-paced mystery, their romantic relationship builds. Readers will find themselves quickly drawn in to both the mystery and the budding romance. Remeta gives their relationship and intimate moments a great deal of warmth and emotional depth.

She also does an exceptional job of revealing the fascinating history behind the Highblood and Lowblood divide. She manages to seamlessly weave this information into the narrative without slowing down the momentum of the story. I loved her diverse cast of characters, from the Highbloods and Lowbloods to vampires and werewolves! With this cast, she adds tremendous depth, personality, and entertainment to each chapter.

Between the engaging characters, imaginative mythology, fast-paced action, and the emotionally satisfying romance, Whispers of the Silver Heart is an exceptional beginning to what promises to be a fantastic new series. Fans of urban fantasy will love this novel, and it would also make an excellent selection for reader groups to discuss. Its themes and interesting cast are sure to inspire lively discussion. I am really looking forward to the next installment in The Highlands Saga.
