It is a colorful and entertaining mix of the real-life backdrop of the ship’s ultimately tragic voyage overlaid with an entirely invented plot employing an ingenious combination of historical figures and fictional characters.

In the spring of 1912, members of a female crime gang, The Forty Elephants, are gathered in their London lair to discuss plans for their next big score. Their plan: steal a painting by a famous artist that recently sold for 100,000 pounds (approximately $487,000 back then, or about the equivalent of a whopping 33 million dollars now). The take will make them all rich for life. The painting is slated to be transported to New York on the maiden voyage of the White Star Line’s enormous new ship Titanic, which is said to be “unsinkable.”

The clever and powerful “queen” of the Elephants, Mary Carr (who actually led the notorious gang in the early twentieth century), spins out the steps they will take, in consultation with fictional characters including her deputy, the cold and ruthless Samantha “Sam” McMurphy, and Colette DuVall, an attractive young French-Canadian thief, plus several other associates and connections who can provide useful information. Mary and her crew devise elaborate plans for her, Sam, and Colette to travel incognito on the Titanic.

At the same time, Harry Worth, a young agent with the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency, has been assigned a courier mission in New York: to deliver a document to the financier JP Morgan in London. Harry will return to New York while working secretly to uncover and stop any potential crime during the Titanic’s first sailing.

The fictional Harry is just one example of how author Bradley Harper skillfully mixes historic figures with his own characters, either to forward the plot or as part of the referential backdrop. Harry’s unique family history secured his Pinkerton appointment – he is described as the son of Adam Worth, a real-life notorious criminal (and the reputed model for Professor Moriarty in the Sherlock Holmes mysteries) who had other plans for his offspring.

Harper’s highly descriptive portrayals make his characters come alive, whether they are real figures or the creations of his imagination. Mary, with a highly intelligent criminal mind, is the ruthless and tough ruler of her organization, but also displays traits that make her humane, sympathetic, and very likeable. Colette is haunted by events in her past and cultivates a hardened demeanor, yet she is vulnerable. When she meets Harry, who is trying to succeed despite the shadow of his father’s notoriety, the sparks fly between them.

Other historic figures mentioned or appearing in Maiden Voyage and interacting with the fictional characters include the head of the White Star Line, J. Bruce Ismay, the ship’s captain and several of its officers, and some of its first-class passengers: the fabulously rich John J. Astor IV and his much-younger wife Madeline, the wealthy philanthropist and activist Mrs. Margaret Brown (who would later become known as Unsinkable Molly Brown, and have her life story portrayed in plays and movies), and Isidore and Ida Straus (Mr. Straus was an owner of Macy’s department store).

It is evident that the author extensively researched the details of the ship’s construction and layout. Readers will feel as though they are aboard, experiencing the Titanic’s elegant and lavish fittings, along with aspects of its mechanical operations, and observing the social interactions of its passengers and the actions of its crew. And, although we all know the Titanic’s fate, Harper successfully creates the tension that causes us to metaphorically hold our collective breaths as the time of its demise draws closer, and we ponder the fates of the principal characters.

Harper’s Maiden Voyage is a true delight for adult fans of multiple categories, including mystery, suspense, crime fiction, thrillers, historical fiction, vintage travel, and romance. Since I personally enjoy all those genres, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

At a Glance:
A historical mystery thriller set aboard the Titanic blends real historical figures with fictional detectives and thieves in a high-stakes art theft.
