Sr. Dr. Teresa Joseph fma offers a glimpse into the everyday realities of writing — from habits and challenges to the sparks of creativity that keep an author moving forward. Her reflections open the door for both readers and writers to better appreciate the passion and persistence behind the written word.
Yes, ‘A peep into the Author’s world’ is indeed a very exciting topic that permits exploration of the author’s creative process, inspirations, and the influences that shape their work. It can encompass various aspects like the writers writing process, the sources of their ideas, the challenges they face, and their personal experiences that find their way into their stories.
Exploration of Creativity
A very apt question is: From where do the author finds inspiration? A variety of sources can be mentioned such as: real-life experiences, works of art, historical events, dreams etc. The list can go on and on. There is a creative process that keeps the author on his/her toes from the initial ideas to the final product. This includes how they develop characters, plots and settings. The writing undoubtedly is coloured by the author’s personal background, beliefs, and values.
Winning Readers
Readers are very curious about the people behind the stories they love and relish and absolutely they enjoy learning about the writer’s world. Insight into this certainly can offer valuable intuitions into the creative process, which can be inspiring and helpful for aspiring writers. What can deepen the reader’s understanding and appreciation of the author’s work is the context and background that is provided.
Tailoring of the Topic
In the world of creativity and originality, it is a known fact that the topic can be tailored to specific genres, such as fantasy, science fiction, personal and interpersonal growth or historical fiction. Different perspectives could be brought on various themes and topics, such as love, peace, justice, hope, social issues or climate related topics. There is always the Personal vs. Fictional which help one to differentiate between the author’s life and their fictional creations, allowing for a nuanced understanding of their work. “Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader – not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained upon” affirms E. L. Doctorow. To write in such a manner that the writing can arouse sensation in the reader, the author has to have a creative way of expressing.
Keep on Striving
Getting involved is one of the basic principles that keep a writer passionate and committed to the task at hand. From just an invitation to substitute someone to present a paper to seeing your work published, there is much joy and satisfaction. Your first article can be so well received that it opens the door to editors of journals to contact you for articles. Here one needs to make the best of his/her spirit of discernment on what type of articles are you passionate about and to what themes you would give your very best etc. Keep on striving with courage and enthusiasm to crack every obstacle that come on your way.
Setting Goals and Deadlines
A committed author has to take time to plan and organize his/her work. Setting goals and deadlines are meant to facilitate the task of writing. It is better to have clear ideas for example about in the month of August 2025, how many articles you intend to complete, on which date you will forward the article to the persons concerned etc. are of utmost importance. Once the article is published, it is important to make it known. A friend of mine one day narrated to me with a deep sense of joy and satisfaction how good she felt when she got to know that one of her article was read in public by the leader of the community during one of their common meetings.
Document for Future Reference
As soon as I was introduced into the field of writing, one of my friends told me: Teresa, keep documenting your articles. In 2006, in the course of an interview, the Dean of Missiology told me: you need to begin to write. To my response yes, I do, the immediate question was where do you write?, in which Journals/Magazines. I handed over my file, and the Dean was amazed to see that I used to write for major journals in India and abroad and further more marvelled to notice that I began writing ever since 1992. Oh so you had been writing since 1992 he said.
Dance into the habit of Book Reviewing
A very fascinating field is the one of Book Reviews. This work calls for precision, accuracy, critical spirit and good presentation skills. After a thorough reading of the book, skilfully, one needs to introduce the book to the readers, highlighting what the author wants to communicate, how the book is organized, how many chapters, how many parts etc.
The review should contain a paragraph or two on the contents of the book and which category of people the book can influence. What more one would like to see in the book also could be specified. Any critical observation regarding the book has to be evidenced carefully and prudently. If there are suggestions that the reviewer would like to offer to the author, it has to be done with wise care. Book reviews offer authors the possibility to gain knowledge and to acquire a copy of the book free of cost. It is very good to have a mentor who can introduce you to the art of Book Reviewing.
Conclusion
How apt are the words of Richard Reeves: “Writing energy is like anything else: The more you put in, the more you get out.” A peep into the Author’s World reveals that his/her world is in reality is a busy and engaging one. The more energy is invested the more one gets out. To my great surprise the other day, an author shared with me: “Writing can get one addicted.” In my opinion, more than getting addicted, one get passionate about writing. An author can well be drawn into the topic under consideration and he/she can truly get immersed and lost in it.
A peep into the Author’s world is a relevant and engaging topic that can offer valuable insights into the creative process, personal influences, and the author’s unique perspective, making it suitable for various writing formats, from essays to articles, from articles to books. I had an amazing experience of turning several articles of a young college student into an enriching book. This required hours of dialogue with the youngster, the organization that financially supported the printing of the book and above all with the director of the Institute etc. It was indeed a worthwhile learning experience. After going through each article, I divided them into different parts and for each part, wrote a paragraph knitting everything together, keeping in mind the readers.
A frequent question we often hear is about what is the perfect time to write? Some say that great ideas come to them at night, others say that they prefer the day time. Barbara Kingsolver has expressed it well: “There is no perfect time to write. There’s only now.” Grab the “now” and plunge into writing. You will surely be surprised at the marvellous product you are able to produce.
