Building a Trilogy with Side Hustle & Flow
Building a Trilogy with Side Hustle & Flow: Turning One Book Into a Movement
Every book starts with an idea, but some ideas keep growing long after the first chapter is written. Cliff Beach thought he was just telling his story in Side Hustle & Flow, but that one book opened the door to a trilogy, a platform, and a movement. In this piece, he shares how listening to readers, experimenting with formats, and showing up with consistency turned a single passion project into something much bigger.
When I wrote my first book, Side Hustle & Flow: 10 Principles To Live and Lead a More Productive Life in Less Time, I never imagined it would grow into a trilogy. At the time, I just wanted to capture my journey of juggling a full-time career with the creative projects that gave me purpose. I was a musician, a digital executive, and like so many of you reading this, I felt the pull to put my story into the world—even if I didn’t quite know where it would lead.
What started as a personal project became not only a published book but a multi-year journey that grew into a series with Side Hustle & Flow: Shape Up and my newest upcoming book, Side Hustle & Flow: The Daily Grind. Along the way, I’ve learned lessons about writing, publishing, and connecting with readers that I hope will inspire you to see the potential in your own work. Whether you’re considering expanding a single book into a series or simply curious about building a body of work that resonates with readers, here’s what I’ve learned from creating a trilogy.
Start with One Clear Message
The first Side Hustle & Flow was born out of necessity. I had spent years working in tech and operations during the day while building my music career at night. Friends and peers would always ask: How do you manage it all? I realized my answer—time management, goal-setting, and staying committed to my passions—could be the foundation of a book.
When you’re starting out as an author, my first piece of advice is to focus on one clear message or problem you can solve for your reader. That clarity will not only make your first book more impactful, but it will also set the stage for what comes next.
The original Side Hustle & Flow became a hybrid of memoir and guidebook, a mix of personal stories and actionable tips for people balancing full-time work with their side passions. Once I saw the positive feedback and reviews, I realized something important: your first book is just the beginning of the conversation with your audience.
Listen to Your Readers and Evolve the Series
After my first book launched, I received messages from readers who connected with my story—but they also had new questions. Many were inspired to chase their creative dreams, but they wanted advice on how to stay energized and focused while doing it.
That feedback led to my second book, Side Hustle & Flow: Shape Up. This time, I leaned into a more personal aspect of my life: health and transformation. I had reversed Type 2 diabetes, lost 50 pounds, and discovered how physical wellness fuels creativity. My readers wanted practical strategies, and I realized I could expand my series by addressing another pain point in their journey—staying fit and resilient enough to pursue big dreams.
Key takeaway for authors: If you’re thinking about creating a series, let your readers guide you. Pay attention to their questions, struggles, and aspirations. Often, the sequel you should write is already living in the emails, comments, or reviews from your audience.
Experiment with Formats and Platforms
One of the biggest lessons I learned while building my trilogy is that not all readers engage with books in the same way. My first book was released in print and eBook first with Black Spring Press Group, but my audience kept asking about an audiobook version, which came a year later. They wanted to hear my voice telling my story.
By the time I released Side Hustle & Flow: Shape Up, on my own imprint, I knew audio was essential, so I led with it first. I recorded the audiobook narration myself, which not only helped me connect with readers in this format but also taught me the value of meeting your audience where they are.
For my third book, Side Hustle & Flow: The Daily Grind, I went a step further. This book is a 365-day motivational guide, designed for bite-sized daily reading. By shifting the structure, I could meet readers in their everyday routine. Some people will sit with a full-length book once, but others want a daily nudge that keeps them motivated all year long.
Practical advice for authors:
- Explore multiple formats—print, eBook, audio—to reach new readers.
- Consider different structures that fit your message. A series doesn’t have to be three identical books; it can evolve to meet different reader needs.
Create a System for Writing Consistently
Writing one book is a challenge. Writing three requires discipline and systems. Early in my journey, I realized that inspiration alone wouldn’t get me to the finish line.
For my first book, I worked in bursts—writing whenever I “made the time.” But by the second and third books, I treated writing like my true side hustle. I blocked specific times on my calendar, used detailed outlines, and set realistic weekly goals. I also leaned on accountability partners to keep me honest.
If you want to create a series, develop a repeatable process:
- Set a daily or weekly word count goal.
- Outline each book in advance to keep your ideas organized.
- Keep a dedicated “idea journal” for future books in the series.
A series often takes years to complete. Without a system, it’s easy to lose momentum between releases.
Leverage Each Book to Promote the Next
Another strategy I’ve learned is that a series is a marketing gift. When readers enjoy one book, they’re far more likely to buy the next. I designed each Side Hustle & Flow book to naturally lead into the next one.
For example:
- In the first book, I talk about maintaining creative energy, which leads into the second book’s focus on health and discipline.
- In the second book, I discuss the importance of daily routines, which tees up the third book’s 365-day guide.
In your own trilogy or series, think about how each book can serve as a stepping stone to the next. Add calls-to-action, invite readers to your email list, and include a sneak peek or mention of the next installment in the back matter of your book.
Turn Your Series Into a Platform
Perhaps the most exciting part of creating a trilogy is that it turned my work into a platform. What started as a single book idea is now a multi-faceted brand.
- I host workshops and speak to creatives about balancing work and passion.
- I’ve launched a companion Udemy course and a mini-documentary to pair with Side Hustle & Flow.
- I connect with my audience year-round on social media by sharing excerpts, motivational posts, and behind-the-scenes content.
For indie authors, a trilogy isn’t just about more books—it’s about building a relationship with your readers that lasts beyond a single launch.
Final Thoughts for Aspiring Series Authors
Looking back, I realize that writing the Side Hustle & Flow trilogy was about more than books. It was about documenting my growth as a creative, sharing the lessons I learned, and creating tools to help others along their own journey.
If you’re considering turning your book into a series, here’s my advice:
- Start with one clear message that can grow over time.
- Listen to your readers to uncover what they need next.
- Experiment with formats and structures to meet your audience where they are.
- Develop a consistent writing system to sustain your momentum.
- Think beyond the book to create a lasting platform and brand.
The beauty of a trilogy—or any series—is that it allows your work to evolve as you do. One book can spark a conversation. Three books can start a movement.
If my journey proves anything, it’s this: your first book is just the beginning!
